Well, MAGA, it looks like there’s a new so-called “woke pope” in town, and the outrage machine is already running at full throttle.
In the far-right media echo chambers, the response to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost’s election as the first American-born pope has been predictably frantic. Conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who often hovers around President Donald Trump’s inner circle, was quick to denounce the new pontiff as a “WOKE MARXIST POPE” in a post brimming with her signature cocktail of paranoia and exaggeration.
Elsewhere, Trump loyalist and former crypto CEO Ryan Selkis resurfaced alleged social media posts from Pope Leo XIV’s past, which reportedly included support for George Floyd and criticism of Trump’s family separation policy. Selkis declared, “A new woke pope. BLM. Kids in cages. Suicidal empathy. American who mostly posts en español.” Evidently, in the MAGA worldview, basic human decency and standing against injustice are unforgivable transgressions.
It’s hard to pinpoint where the “empathy is a sin” doctrine appears in scripture, but the MAGA faithful seem enraged by the new pope’s values. His messages of love, peace, and respect for the dignity of immigrants reflect the teachings of Jesus, and yet they are dismissed as “woke” by those who increasingly appear to worship at the altar of Trump instead. This backlash speaks volumes about how far they’ve strayed from the core principles of Christianity.
For hardline Trump supporters, the new pope represents a direct challenge to their MAGA-fueled cruelty.
