California Governor Gavin Newsom has delivered a sharp and pointed critique aimed squarely at Donald Trump, focusing on an issue that the former president and many of his supporters are all too familiar with: Trump’s mental acuity and overall cognitive condition.
The two high-profile political figures have been embroiled in a heated dispute concerning the federalization and deployment of the National Guard to California, following a series of anti-deportation protests and isolated instances of unrest in Los Angeles. In an episode of “The Daily” released last Thursday, the Democratic governor offered a detailed and candid recounting of his conversations with Trump from the previous weekend—conversations that both sides have portrayed in sharply contrasting ways.
According to both men, they spoke on Saturday morning, during which Trump reportedly brought up the topic of the National Guard deployment. However, Newsom vehemently rejected that version as untrue. “He lied, on my mother and dad’s grave,” Newsom declared emphatically during the New York Times podcast. “I don’t say that lightly. He lied. Stone cold liar.”
Newsom went even further, explaining that when Trump began fabricating parts of their conversation later that same day, it triggered a deeper and more troubling concern. “It started to disturb me on a different level—maybe he actually believed he said those things,” Newsom said. “He’s not all there,” the governor bluntly added. This direct and personal attack from Newsom, who is widely regarded as a leading presidential contender, marks a significant escalation in their ongoing and intensifying political feud.
