Thousands of protesters gathered in Washington, D.C., and cities across the United States on Saturday to oppose President Donald Trump’s policies on deportations, government firings, and the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Outside the White House, demonstrators held banners reading “Workers should have the power,” “No kingship,” “Stop arming Israel,” and “Due process,” as captured in media footage. Protesters vocalized their support for migrants affected by Trump’s deportation policies, stood in solidarity with federal workers who were dismissed, and expressed concerns over universities facing funding threats under the administration.
“Amid the Trump administration’s intensified use of the U.S. deportation system, a speaker at a rally in Lafayette Square near the White House proclaimed, ‘We are building networks of resistance to protect our neighbors.’ Demonstrators expressed solidarity through a variety of causes. Many waved Palestinian flags, donned keffiyeh scarves, and chanted ‘Free Palestine,’ decrying the loss of lives in Gaza. Others stood in support of Ukraine, calling for stronger U.S. measures against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion and holding signs demanding an end to the ongoing conflict.”
Since assuming office, Trump, in collaboration with billionaire ally Elon Musk, has enacted extensive reforms within the federal government, terminating over 200,000 employees and seeking to dismantle several key agencies. The administration has also detained numerous international students and issued threats to revoke federal funding from universities over programs addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, climate change, and pro-Palestinian advocacy. These actions have sparked widespread criticism from human rights organizations.
Protesters gathered near the Washington Monument, holding banners with messages such as “Hate never made any nation great” and “Equal rights for all doesn’t take away yours.” Similar demonstrations erupted in New York City, Chicago, and countless other cities nationwide, marking the second day of protests following Trump’s inauguration.
